PROJECT: Solar pump for Enoomatasiani Girls Secondary School

Objective: Install a hybrid water pump for Enoomatasiani Girls’ Secondary School.

Summary: Enoomatasiani is one of the biggest public girl schools in Kajiado North Sub-county. They spend approximately $1000 to $1500 on power per month. We hope to install solar- powered water pumps in the schools to help irrigate land and grow food for the girls. Continuous water supply will also provide A lasting solution to power outage problems while pumping water, a clean environment within the school’s compound and improved nutrition for the adolescent girls (14-18 yrs. of age).

No. of children: 1474 girls and 60 members of staff

Partner Background: Enoomatasiani Girls Secondary School is a public girls’ boarding school located in Kajiado North Sub-County, of Kajiado County. The school is a girls’ dream institution situated in the marginalized Kajiado county which is inhabited by predominantly the Maasai community. It is the only girls’ secondary offering boarding facilities in the sub-county and plays a critical role in addressing the secondary educational requirements of the Maa community specifically, their girl child.

Partner Voices

Our partnership with Kitechild and their role in helping us start the Shamba (Kenyan for farm) and dairy farm has eliminated expenditure for vegetables and milk improving the children's nutrition and health greatly. The water borehole, the vegetables and the milk has also brought the community closer to us, as they come to get water and buy milk and vegtables. We are now coexisting well.

Wasilwa Lusweti, Watoto Wema Director

Kitechild doesn't give us handouts or tokens, they give us VALUE. They provided us with the seeds and funding to build two greenhouses and today we have greenhouses full of green tomatoes and are expanding the farm to grow onions and potatoes outside in the open air. This is never heard of before in Masai land, growing one's own food, but with their help we did it.

Charles Maina, former Mother Esther Director
